10 Tips for Writing Your Life Story
Writing your life story is one of the most meaningful things you can do. But getting started can feel overwhelming. Here are ten tips to help you begin — and keep going.
1. Start with the memory that pulls you
Don't begin at the beginning. Start with the memory that feels most vivid, the one that keeps coming back to you. The structure will follow.
2. Write like you speak
Your family wants to hear your voice — not an imitation of a literary author. Write the way you'd tell the story over a cup of tea.
3. Use all five senses
Don't just say 'the house was old.' Say what it smelled like, how the floorboards creaked, what the light looked like at dusk. Sensory details make memories come alive.
4. Don't wait for perfection
A rough chapter written today is worth more than a perfect chapter never written. You can always edit later.
5. Use writing prompts
When you're stuck, a good prompt like 'What was your favourite meal as a child?' can unlock a flood of memories.
6. Write little and often
Fifteen minutes a day is enough. Consistency matters more than marathon sessions.
7. Include the ordinary
The everyday details — what you ate, how you got to school, what was on the radio — are often the most fascinating to future generations.
8. Don't worry about order
You don't have to write chronologically. Write the chapters as they come to you, then arrange them later.
9. Include photos
Photos trigger memories and bring your story to life. Add them as you go.
10. Remember who it's for
When you feel stuck, picture the person you're writing for — your grandchild, your partner, your future self. That's all the motivation you need.
